Level 3 Freeride / Avalanche Awareness module is part of the LSIA Level 3 Ski Instructor Programme – the second highest qualification available in Lithuania and recognized internationally within the ISIA system. The Freeride / Avalanche Awareness Module focuses on off-piste skiing skills and mountain safety and is conducted under the guidance of a LSIA Examiner and a UIAGM Mountain Guide.
LSIA is a full member of ISIA (International Ski Instructors Association). The LSIA Level 3 qualification corresponds to the ISIA Stamp level.
COURSE OVERVIEW
Duration: 8 days (minimum 64 hours). Minimum 5 hours per day on snow + indoor theory sessions

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
Off-piste skiing
• Off-piste skiing progressions – bumps, steeps, powder snow, couloirs
• Guideline progressions for students seeking skiing in variable terrain
• Observation and route-finding skills for moving in unmarked mountain terrain
Mountain safety & avalanche awareness
• Safety equipment – use of transceivers/beacons, shovel and probe
• Weather and avalanche risk management
• Snow science and avalanche characteristics
• Orientation and navigation techniques
• Rescue in the backcountry
• First Aid
COURSE STRUCTURE
The learning process combines intensive on-snow off-piste sessions with theoretical indoor sessions on snow science, weather, and risk management. The course is led jointly by a LSIA Examiner and a UIAGM Mountain Guide to ensure the highest standards of technical and safety instruction.
ASSESSMENT
Candidates are assessed on all units of the module except skiing performance (which is assessed during the Level 3 final assessment). Non-skiing parts of the module can be resat during the final assessment if needed.
You are evaluated in:
- Off-piste skiing progressions
- Safety equipment handling
- Avalanche and risk management knowledge
- Navigation and route-finding
- Rescue procedures
Successful candidates receive a module completion record toward their LSIA Level 3 Ski Instructor certification.
PROFESSIONAL STATUS
Upon completing all Level 3 modules and the final assessment, LSIA Level 3 instructors are qualified to teach up to advanced skiers in all-mountain situations – including bumps, steep terrain, and variable off-piste conditions – in organized snowsports schools worldwide.
ISIA equivalency:
- Level 3 → ISIA Stamp
WHAT’S NEXT?
After completing all three Level 3 modules (Technical/Teaching, Performance/Race, and Freeride/Avalanche Awareness), instructors proceed to the LSIA Level 3 Assessment Module (4 days) and Second discipline course to receive their full Level 3 qualification.
