LSIA Level 3 Freeride / Avalanche Module [Spring 2023]

The aim of the Level 3 Freeride / Avalanche Awareness Module is to develop candidate‘ off-piste skiing skills such as bumps, steeps, powder snow, couloirs, etc. and introduce the guideline progressions for students seeking skiing in a variable terrain. This module provides a basic understanding of the nature of avalanches and what is needed to make decisions about risk management when skiing through unpatrolled terrain with a group of students. This module will also help develop observation and route finding skills for moving in unmarked terrain on the mountains. This course will be under the guidance of a LSIA Examiner and a UIAGM Guide and candidates will be assessed on all the units of the module except the skiing performance which is later part of final assessment (candidates can resit non-skiing parts of the this module during final assessment).
